DIET IN THE WILD -Sugar Gliders prefer sweet foods. They like sweet sap of the wattle or acacia gum and some types of eucalyptus. Protein is from insects, bird eggs, and small vertebrates, small birds, rodents and lizards.
DIET IN CAPTIVITY - BALANCE DIET IS IMPORTANT
A sugar glider's diet in captivity consists mainly fruits and vegetables as well as protein.
A ratio of 75% fruits and vegetables and 25% protein, along with add calcium and vitamins. Also fresh water daily.
There are a lot of diets out there that people use. Two that I know that are used
a lot are: Leadbeater's mix (BML) and Darcy's Diet. They both incorporate fruits,
veggies and insects in their meal plan.
FRUITS & VEGETABLES - Sugar Gliders enjoy wide variety of fruits and vegetables such as :FRUITS: apples, oranges, cantaloupes, grapes, pears etc. VEGETABLES: peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, corn, squash etc. Just for an example. (NEVER FEED rhubarb or onion, garlic, salt, potatoes eyes or turnip as they are poisonous to Sugar Gliders). NEVER FEED raw sugar, sugar substitutes or candy, and never chocolate.
PROTEIN - : RED MEAT, POULTRY, EGGS, INSECTS - Meat and poultry (skinned and boneless) should be lean cooked well (NOT FRIED or with any SEASONING or PRESERVATIVES on it). It should be cut into vary small pieces or minced. INSECTS - Live or freeze dried. Do Not over feed. DO NOT feed insect from in or out of the house that might have come in contact with pesticides, or might have parasites. Also I have read NOT to feed TUNA as it will cause severe VITAMIN "E" DEFICIENCY and other problems.
Some people feed frozen Pinky mice that have not grown any fur or fresh day old chicks (I do not know if you can get chicks frozen). I do not feed mice or chicks. Some also feed Tofu for protein. Mine do not seem to like it.
